The Steam Experiment (2009)

Posted on November 6, 2009. Filed under: thriller |

Ridiculed and dismissed by his contemporaries due to his outrageous warnings about the dangers of Global Warming, a once-respected professor and academic hatches a deadly experiment designed to prove his theories in this thriller starring Val Kilmer and Armand Assante. James Pettis is a man on the brink. After publishing a pair of alarmist books claiming that Global Warming would hasten the collapse of humanity and bring about the end of the world as we know it, Pettis the laughing stock of the academic community. But even after losing everything, Pettis remained convinced that his theories were sound. Then, one day, Pettis bursts into the Tampa Tribune claiming that he can prove his hypothesis in no uncertain terms. In a bit to regain his status in the Global Warming community, Pettis has set up an experiment: six unsuspecting people have been lured into a “Steam Room” where the temperature will gradually rise, providing undeniable proof of Pettis’ theory that rising temperatures on the planet’s surface would send humanity spiraling into chaos. Should the Tampa Tribune fail to print his theories on the front page of their next edition, Pettis’ unwitting lab rats will die a slow and excruciating death. Now it’s up to Detective Jack Mancini to figure out whether Pettis is bluffing, or if he actually put the lives of innocent civilians in danger in a mad bid to prove his point about the dangers of Global Warming. But Detective Mancini has only two hours to discern whether the “Steam Room” is indeed real, or the manipulative creation of a delusional psychopath: does his risk his life and the lives of others to rescue people who may only exist in Pettis’ mind, or does he take the madman at his word and do everything in his power to appease him? The clock is ticking, and the only way out of this deadly maze is for Detective Mancini to engage in an intellectual game of cat-and-mouse against an opponent who truly has nothing left to lose. A Perfect Getaway (2009)

Posted on November 6, 2009. Filed under: thriller |

An adventurous young couple, Cliff and Cydney are celebrating their honeymoon by hiking to a remote beach in Hawaii. The couple comes across two hitchhikers, Cleo and Kale, and a group of frightened hikers discussing a double murder in Honolulu of another newlywed couple on the island, with the victims having their teeth pulled out, and they begin to question whether they should turn back.

Unsure whether to stay or flee, Cliff and Cydney join up with another couple, Nick, who claims to have a titanium plate in his head and be a former special forces operative, and his longtime girlfriend, Gina, a former butcher. Far from civilization or rescue, everyone begins to look like a threat and nobody knows whom to trust. Gina and Cydney swap personal stories, and Cydney tells Gina about Rocky, a former lover who murdered a neighbor’s dog and displayed the corpse while the two were having sex and threatened to kill her if she ever told. Eventually the two couples spy a police helicopter arresting Cleo and Kale, and a search of Kale’s bag reveals a Dentyne Ice box full of human teeth. Gina and Cydney reveal that each thought that the others were the killers, and the group continues to the beach.
After Cliff and Nick go kayaking to a nearby cove, Gina begins going through the other couple’s wedding video, she inserts a memory card with a separate set of photos on and finds a shot that reveals that Cliff and Cydney are impostors. A series of flashbacks reveal that Cliff and Cydney are the killers, and have been killing people and then stealing their identities by ingratiating themselves with other couples while on vacation to learn their personal histories, mannerisms, and speech patterns. They killed the newlyweds from the wedding video and changed their appearances to look like them. We learn Cliff, revealed to be Rocky from Cydney’s story, has been killing newlywed couples ever since he murdered the dog. Cydney, who was forced and eventually enjoyed participating in the murders, and Cliff learned more about their victims from all their friends and family talking about them in the wedding video. Earlier, Cliff planted the teeth in Cleo’s bag to frame both her and Kale.
Gina winds up on the top of the cave and sees Nick & Cliff below. Cliff shoots Nick in the back of the head, causing him to capsize. Cliff shoots at Gina but misses. Cydney fights Gina, but Cydney is thrown down and lands in the water. Gina runs and tries to call for help, but fails, and is nearly caught by Rocky before stabbing him through the hand with Cydney’s knife. Gina runs, encountering another group of hikers looking for the stolen kayaks. Rocky attempts to convince the group that Gina is a crystal meth addict, and is having a delusional episode. His act seems convincing until one of the hikers, an EMT, points out that Rocky, not Gina, appears stoned, and Rocky shoots the entire group.
Meanwhile, Nick, having been saved by his titanium skull plate and hiding in the air pocket under the kayak, wakes up in the cave and goes to save Gina. Nick attacks Rocky, splitting his hand in half with a hatchet. Meanwhile, Cydney flags down a police helicopter. After nearly killing Rocky with the killer’s .45 pistol, Gina jumps in the way of a police sniper and convinces Nick to drop the weapon, and the two embrace. Cydney sees Nick and Gina together and decides she will not go to prison for Rocky. She realizes how much she has changed for the worse, calling him, “The guy that fucked up my life.” Cyndey informs the cops that the real killer is Cliff, and points out that he’s going for the gun while Nick and Gina have their backs to him. A sniper sees this and shoots Cliff in the forehead, killing him. It is unknown whether Cydney herself was arrested.
Gina and Nick are in the helicopter, and Nick proposes to Gina. After accepting, both suggest in unison to have no honeymoon.

The International (2009)

Posted on October 27, 2009. Filed under: thriller |

Interpol agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts) are determined to bring to justice one of the world’s most powerful banks, the International Bank of Business and Credit (IBBC) which funds terrorist activities. Uncovering illegal activities including money laundering, arms trading, and the destabilization of governments, Salinger’s and Whitman’s investigation takes them from Berlin to Milan, where the IBBC assassinates Umberto Calvini, an Italian prime ministerial candidate. Following a lead on the assassin to New York City, Salinger is involved in a gunfight in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. An ally of Salinger in the NYPD tracks down the assassin’s handler Wexler, who helps Salinger reach Istanbul, where the CEO of the IBBC is conducting an arms deal. Both Wexler and Skarssen are killed by a hitman contracted by Enzo and Mario Calvini to avenge their father’s murder by the bank. Salinger is left stunned; his investigation, pursuit and determination having lead him to nothing. However, during the credits, it is indicated that the bank continues with its plans and is successful, despite the death of its CEO. Pre–release trailers indicate that a source for the drama may be found in the quasi-historical corporate entity known as Permindex and the defunct Bank of Credit and Commerce International.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009) DvDRip

Posted on October 16, 2009. Filed under: 2009, denzel washington, thriller, tony scoot |

The Taking of Pelham 123 is a 2009 thriller film, directed by Tony Scott, and starring Denzel Washington, and John Travolta. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Morton Freedgood (writing under the pseudonym John Godey), and is a remake of the original 1974 film adaptation, which was also remade in 1998 as a TV movie. Production of the current remake began in March 2008, and the film was released on June 12, 2009.
Four heavily armed men, led by Bernard Ryder (John Travolta), board the New York City subway 6 train departed from Pelham Bay Park Station at 1:23 p.m., and proceed to take control of it.
Meanwhile, MTA dispatcher Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) is assigned to the Rail Control Center, due to an ongoing investigation that he took a bribe to recommend a Japanese car manufacturer for the next subway car contract. The group then uncouple the front car from the rest of the train and hold the passengers in this front car hostage. One of the hijackers, Bashkim (Victor Gojcaj), kills an undercover police officer in the course of the action. Ryder and a former MTA train operator named Ramos settle down in the front of the car, while the other hijackers watch the hostages in the back. They demand $10 million in ransom money to be paid within 60 minutes. For each minute past the deadline, one passenger will be killed. Garber and Ryder exchange conversations through the microphone, while his men set up a wi-fi booster apparatus to enable Ryder to access his laptop in the tunnel to watch the stock market plunge nearly 1,000 points during the next hour.
Unknown to him, one of the male passengers has an active laptop with a webcam, that was casually knocked to the floor, facing the car’s interior previously when they took their hostages, which simultaneously reconnects using that same wi–fi link; reestablishing the feed to his girlfriend’s desktop with whom he was videochatting; when she returns to her PC, she sees the hostage situation through her webcam and provides the live feed to a local television station. Garber agrees to have the city pay Ryder the $10 million ransom, after the Mayor (James Gandolfini) is intercepted by his staff aboard a train in the Bronx and is transported back to RCC.
NYPD Emergency Service Unit Lt. Camonetti (John Turturro) enters RCC, and Garber’s boss, who has a rocky relationship with Garber, orders Garber to leave the premises. Camonetti takes over the hostage negotiations, infuriating Ryder, who demands that Garber be put back on the mic and that he will speak only to Garber. When Camonetti refuses, explaining Garber has already left the building, Ryder shoots and kills the train operator, who was Garber’s classmate in motor school. Camonetti immediately has Garber brought back on the mic, talking to Ryder, while he sets up a sniper unit in the tunnel where the car is stuck, ordering all officers not to fire upon any hijacker until told to do so. Camonetti is puzzled as to why Ryder will only talk to Garber, but when he learns about Garber’s bribery investigation, he asks Garber in consenting to search his home, which Garber agrees and tells his wife about it. Ryder learns through news reports about Garber’s alleged bribe in Japan and forces him to confess by holding the boy with the laptop at gunpoint, saying the reason for taking the money was to pay for his kids college education but that the Japanese company was his first choice anyway. While the police stand down in the tunnel, a rat on the roadbed crawls up an officer’s leg, causing him to discharge his sniper rifle, killing Ramos, who was sitting in the motorman’s position.
The money is transported uptown to Grand Central and Ryder demands Garber to personally deliver it within 7 minutes. Garber calls his wife to inform her about his new responsibility, in order to save the hostages, but she cares only for his own safety. She makes him promise to pick up some milk on the way home, because he must come home safely. Garber delivers the money (An officer has loaned and concealed a 9mm pistol in one of the bags), then is ordered to operate the train to another location, where the hijackers exit. To ensure that the police go to the wrong location, Ryder uses a special mechanism to lock the driving lever in the full-speed position, bypassing the dead-man’s switch and causing the train to accelerate and go down Coney Island at high speed.
The MTA are unaware of the mechanism holding the driving lever down and believe the hijackers and Garber to still be inside the train. Garber manages to escape from the hijackers and follows them to the emergency exit inside an abandoned subway station underneath The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Inside the hotel, Ryder splits away from Bashkim and Emri, who are surrounded outside the hotel by police; as they both reach for their guns, the police open fire on the two of them, killing them. The runaway train is tripped by a red signal one station away from Coney Island and the train comes to a halt safely. Ryder boards a taxi with Garber in pursuit. Ryder checks his laptop, where it is revealed that he has short–sold the market and invested in gold, earning him a profit far larger than the ransom money. Ryder goes to the Manhattan Bridge, where he leaves the cab, due to heavy traffic, and uses the pedestrian walkway on the bridge. Garber confronts Ryder on the bridge where Ryder demands Garber kill him before the police do. Ryder gives Garber 10 seconds to shoot him. When Ryder finishes counting to 10, he takes out his gun, but Garber gets the first shot out. Before Ryder dies, he calls Garber his “goddamn” hero.
The mayor thanks Garber for saving the hostages, and vows his staff in representing him in the bribery investigation. The Mayor then offers Garber a ride home in his car along with the escort service. Garber refuses the offer, saying the subway is faster and is his lifeblood. He then heads home with the last shot of the film being Garber, walking into his home holding a half–gallon of milk in a grocery bag.

The Life Before Her Eyes (2007)

Posted on October 6, 2009. Filed under: thriller |

Imaginative, impetuous and wild Diana (Evan Rachel Wood) cannot wait for her adult life to begin. While awaiting the final days of high school in the lush springtime, Diana tests her limits with sex and drugs as her more conservative friend Maureen (Eva Amurri) watches with concern. Then the two teens are involved in a Columbine-like shooting incident at their school and are forced to make an impossible choice.

In a flashback we can see Diana’s adulthood. She leads an apparently normal life as an art history university professor. She has a child, Emma, and she’s married to the professor who once gave a speech in her school about the power of visualization, how one can shape one’s own future in this way. We learn, however, that she feels guilty about something that doesn’t let her sleep.

One day she gets a call from Emma’s school. The nuns who run the school complain about her behavior. Later, at an ice cream parlor, Diana asks Emma not to hide any more as she is always doing. “You hate me,” Emma replies to her mother’s reproaches. They leave the parlor abruptly and as they’re about to get into the car Diana sees her husband, the professor, with another woman. She hesitates about confronting him and instead remains in the middle of the street where she is hit by a pickup truck. On her way to the hospital she imagines that blood is escaping from her body. However in fact she hasn’t been hurt by the accident. What is happening is that she is remembering the complications she had following an abortion in her high school days.

The day of the 15th anniversary of the shooting a memorial is held at the school. We see Diana drive in front of the school several times until she finally decides to stop and bring in some flowers. As she enters the school she’s asked whether she’s one of the survivors. She doesn’t answer and simply walks inside, first leaving flowers on some desks and then moving on to the rest rooms where one of the shootings took place.

At that moment she gets a call from Emma’s school. Her daughter is missing. Diana is told that a pink piece of clothing has been found in the woods. She drives there and walks through the woods, shouting out her daughter’s name. Emma appears before Diana’s eyes for a moment but then vanishes almost as soon as she has appeared.

We’re taken back to the rest rooms in the school where Diana left the flowers. This is the place where she and Maureen were forced to decide which of them should survive. Maureen had offered herself first, but the shooter asks Diana why it shouldn’t be her. She acquiesces and asks to be killed. She is then shot and dies. All that we’ve seen earlier in the movie is what Diana had dreamed her adult life would be like. Emma is the girl she never had, the girl that she aborted.
